Giving Back & Giving Thanks This Holiday Season
Tuesday, November 26th, 2019
We’re so grateful for all of you who gave us your vote of confidence in two local reader’s choice competitions recently!
McCamy was voted as one of two “favorites” in the Residential Contractor category in
Knoxville’s 2019 Best Businesses competition that was hosted by Knoxville News Sentinel. We were also voted Best Contractor in the Outdoor Living Space category in
2019 Cityview’s Best of the Best reader’s contest hosted by Cityview Magazine.
Being recognized by our community is wonderful, and we’re humbly grateful to receive the awards. But perhaps even more rewarding is giving back to our greater Knoxville community, and we feel fortunate to have the skills, resources, and passion to help those in need.
Here are 3 organizations we’re grateful to have partnered with this year!
Safe Living Renovations For Those In Need
This year we have taken on 10 projects for low income families, veterans, disabled, and elderly people throughout the community through the nonprofit organization
Rebuilding Together Knoxville. Each of these home repairs or renovations are typically an emergency to some degree, and it’s crucial that the more vulnerable members of our community can benefit from safe living improvements.
For example, these projects typically involve a lot of handicap-accessibility work such as building wheelchair ramps or accessible showers, fixing unsafe electrical issues, repairing roofs, and installing HVAC units for folks without heat or air conditioning.
One homeowner showed us a photo on her phone of her living room thermostat the summer day that she was told we’d be installing an HVAC unit. The thermostat read 98 degrees. She said that our work made all the difference in being able to stay in their home.
For an earlier project, we worked with Rebuilding Together and Discovery for a “build day” to renovate the playground at the Boys & Girls Club Vestal. Just one aspect of that project was rebuilding a wooden bridge that children used to walk from the building to the playground. The boards were rotten and very unsafe for the kids.
Grant McMahan, President of McCamy Construction, is on the board of Rebuilding Together Knoxville and oversees 10 projects a year for the organization. Federal grant money helps support the costs involved with fixing these houses, and the McCamy team dedicates countless hours of love and labor for each project.
Moving & Restoring A Historic Home
Another labor of love and this year involved carefully moving and restoring a Fort Sanders area Queen Ann style cottage, built around 1900, that was due to be bulldozed for a parking garage expansion with the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. McCamy’s Grant McMahan serves on Vintage Properties Committee for
Knox Heritage to preserving Knoxville’s historic jewels, and knew saving this home would be a perfect project to take on.
With grants from the City of Knoxville’s Preservation Fund, Covenant Health, and the 1772 Foundation, McCamy spearheaded this Highland Avenue restoration project.
The home still has its original windows and much of the original siding in place. We reused foundation bricks from its former location across the street and added salvaged wood columns to the new front porch. The final phase of restoration will bring the interior back to life.
Supporting Babies With Special Needs
This year McCamy has continued our long-time support of
Friends of Tennessee Babies with Special Needs. This nonprofit organization connects families of children with disabilities with the professional support and resources they need. This may involve resources such as adaptive equipment, hearing aids, respite care, family education, or emergency support to enhance the lives of these children with disabilities.
To support these special families, McCamy has sponsored the annual fundraising event Jazz Baby for several years. This year’s event was held at The Foundry in September, and raised a substantial amount to help buy supplies, provide care and host events for these families in dire situations.
We were thrilled to be able to make a difference in the lives of special needs children and babies, as well as to help with families who need renovations on their homes and to do our part reviving historic homes in Knoxville.
At McCamy Construction, we believe in giving our all—whether that’s by serving our community or by doing our work so well that we earn your vote for local reader’s choice awards. We know that you have many options for who you trust to make your dream renovation, custom built home, or outdoor living space a reality, and we’re honored to lead Knoxville in fine home construction.
