Big box or nursery: Where is the best place to buy your trees and shrubs?
Friday, October 31st, 2014
That is a good question, isn’t it? We’ve put in a few trees and shrubs over the years. Here’s what we’ve learned.
For our business, we have found that retail nurseries are a better choice for us. If you visit both kinds of places, you’ll find that local nurseries often carry a wider variety of plants than big box stores.
New and improved plants often show up here before they’re available at the big box stores, and sometimes you’ll find some newer varieties of plants that won’t be available at a big box store.
People ask if the prices are higher, and admittedly they tend to be, but the employees or owner usually give good advice about plant selection and care. There may even be a guarantee for their plants. Sometimes there is even a volume discount available.
If you choose a nursery that sells locally grown plants, your trees and shrubs will have a much better chance of survival having been grown in local soil. The soil is more likely to be similar and the plants will be used to just one climate, rather than having been raised in a greenhouse and having to acclimate to another climate.
Presently we use
John Deere landscapes for our trees and shrubs. They are very helpful and we recommend them. John Deere also offers great discounts if you have an account with them.
