An Outdoor Fireplace Addition Just In Time For Football (And Fairies)
Tuesday, October 30th, 2018
Emily Harper was watching football with her husband Shannon in their 1920’s Sequoyah neighborhood home as they took turns checking on their two young girls who were playing outside.
“The girls wanted to be outside and we wanted to see the game,” Emily said. “As Shannon and I ran back and forth it also occurred to us that our TV room is very small and narrow, so we could never entertain a group of friends for any event that involved watching TV, like a football game.”
As they talked about the dilemma, Emily said, “I bet we could put a TV outside on this wall so that we could be out there with the girls, plus have plenty of room to entertain friends.” When Shannon added that he’d love to add a year-round outdoor fireplace to the idea, their dream outdoor entertainment area began to take shape.

The couple was already familiar with McCamy’s work and reputation through friends, so after comparing a few bids they met with Grant. “Grant came over, listened to what we wanted, and did a sketch. Then we met a couple of McCamy’s Superintendents, Justin and Ben, who were awesome. We never looked back after meeting the team,” Emily recalled.
Since Emily does part-time design work with G&G Interiors, she had a good idea of the style she wanted the outdoor area to be and worked alongside McCamy’s designer, Ashley Jones, on the details.
“Our house is a traditional white brick 1920’s house, so I wanted to honor that yet also add modern elements,” Emily said. “It’s a blend of traditional and contemporary.”
For example, the couple didn’t want a standard shaker-style door to protect the TV from weather. “We really wanted something cool and custom-made for the cabinet doors. I showed McCamy’s trim carpenter a photo of louver doors that I thought would be a homerun. He hadn’t done those before but they turned out fabulous.”
Emily thought outside-the-box for the cabinetry hardware as well. “The hardware we liked was either unattainable or really expensive. So I did a sketch of what I wanted on a piece of paper and then looked on ETSY.com for someone who could make it. I found a guy in Seattle who makes custom hardware and he was able to create exactly what I had sketched.”
For the overall layout, Emily and Shannon wanted the outdoor space to serve two purposes: an entertainment area with outdoor lighting large enough for a big “shindig,” and a cozy space around the TV with a sofa and two chairs for their family of four.
“We also thought it would be great if we could be relaxing with a glass of wine while the girls played nearby,” Emily said. A space to the right of the fireplace that was too small for a playset turned out to be just the right size for a magical fairy garden to delight the girls. Lawn Butler added grass, flowers, and turned a flower pot into the perfect home for fairies.
“The girls love it,” Emily said, adding, “And we all love our new outdoor fireplace area, just in time for fall weather and football. We knew McCamy had a high standard and we had seen some of their work around town. Everything we explained we wanted to have happen they made happen. McCamy truly makes visions become realities.”
From concept sketch to design and construction, all work on the outdoor fireplace entertainment area was completed in-house by McCamy. Permanent outdoor living spaces are a growing trend and are one of our specialties. The possibilities are endless—a poolside cabana with a vintage swing and fireplace or a covered patio with a stone fire pit and rustic beams. Whatever your dream may be for your outdoor space, we can build it.
