A River-View Pool Provides Missing Link For Sequoyah Home
Monday, September 30th, 2019
Owning a home is an invitation to constantly assess what could or should be improved, and this is no different for those who live in the Sequoyah neighborhood of Knoxville. For some Sequoyah homeowners, this means seeing the potential in a
home that was once considered a money-pit, or embracing the architectural quirkiness of a
one-of-a-kind historic home.
For other homeowners, it seems like most everything is in place—the home and even the view couldn’t be better. But there’s always something that can be renovated or added, some missing link that makes a home and its property more loved and valuable to those who live there.
Such was the case with a Sequoyah neighborhood home overlooking the Tennessee River. Having lived in the home for 12 years, the homeowner says, “The home is fabulous and the setting with the view of the river is spectacular. But the backyard between the home and the dock was kind of a void.”
The backyard space had old brick pavers and tired landscaping. It was, essentially, an area for the family with three kids to pass through on their way between the home and the dock.
“For years I thought a pool would be perfect in that backyard space above the dock and river,” the homeowner said. While he didn’t have a vision for how he wanted it to look exactly, he did have a feeling that once the pool and deck area was in place it would look as if it was always meant to be there.
Not “Just Another Pool”
The homeowner was familiar with McCamy’s work from several other renovation projects in the Sequoyah neighborhood, and felt they would be a good fit to design and construct the outdoor pool space.
“I relied on McCamy to design the space for me, and gave them full latitude because it was clear that they had much more experience in this matter than me. All I did was pick out the finishes and it all worked out really well,” he said, adding, “They certainly delivered the quality I was looking for, it’s perfect.”
“It’s not just another pool,” the homeowner said. “The rock and pavers, the pool shape, and the finishes are all very distinct. My family and friends have had some really good times around this pool already, and the best is yet to come.”
As with any addition or renovation project, there are challenges, and in this case there were engineering codes to adhere to due to the riverfront setting. “There were some limitations with the River Corp of Engineers with what we could do,” the homeowner said.
“But McCamy handled everything and built the pool according to code so I didn’t really have to get tangled up in all that.”
Now that the pool area is being put to good use every chance the family gets, the homeowner confirms that it feels as if it was always meant to be there.
“The pool was sort of the missing link for the house and the property,” he said. “My kids and I are on the water a lot and we entertain a good bit. This pool area has become a gathering place to swim, lay out, watch television, and play cornhole. We wanted a real classy pool and we got it from McCamy.”
