923 North Central Street, future home of The Central Collective

923 North Central Street. Sort of has a ring to it, doesn’t it?
This is the future home of The Central Collective, another
McCamy Construction commercial renovation project.
Already in the works, this project is unusual and exciting, a prime candidate for a complete makeover in an area that is definitely up and coming back to life.
The building is owned by husband/wife duo, Shawn Poynter and Dale Mackey. Although they think the building may have been a car radio repair shop at one time, Shawn and Dale have their own out-of-the-box plans for this humble building.

Shawn says their main goal is for it to be a collective base, a playground for creative endeavors. “Two of the spaces will have the capacity to be rented out for community use. We want it to be a gathering place.”
Both of them happen to be pretty creative themselves. Shawn is a nationally known photographer with work published by the New York Times as well as other publications. His studio,
Shawn Poynter Photography, will be housed on the lower level.

Dale has made her mark on the world as well. She is Dale of
Dale’s Fried Pies, a delicacy known all over the Southeast.
You can find her and her fried pie cart in Market Square on Wednesdays and Saturdays, as well as at other Knoxville venues through the week. Dale’s kitchen will also be housed on the lower level.

A third space will be upstairs. Initially it will be the home of the
Center for Rural Strategies, a non-profit organization based in Kentucky, for which Shawn is the visual editor. Their mission is to “improve economic and social conditions for communities . . . through the creative and innovative use of media and communications.”
Good “bone structure” will allow us to make this hidden gem into a treasure for the community. We definitely have our work cut out for us, and we are thrilled to participate in the recycling of this building.

Check out the progress we have made so far. The entire second floor has been removed and the framing has begun for the top floor.
Tune in to see the makeover progress over the next few months. We bet you’ll be amazed at the results.
