7 Trends to Avoid When Remodeling Your Home
Tuesday, September 29th, 2015
Well, it’s about time. You’ve decided you’re finally ready to begin that remodeling project you’ve had simmering on your back burner since the day you bought your house. As you sift through the design inspirations you’ve pinned over the past few years, you start to wonder if any of the ideas you loved at the time are still as trendy as they once were. The funny thing about interior design is that it can be unpredictable. What is trending now may be old news by the end of the year; or it may stick around for a few years before slowly fading out.
At McCamy Construction, we want to help you make informed decisions when remodeling your home. For a remodel that is both beautiful and current, here are a few previously popular trends to avoid:
Chevron Prints
Not to be confused with the classic herringbone print, chevron prints may have been the most overused home decor and design trend in 2014. If you want to add a splash of color, use solid-colored textured fabric instead, or if you’re feeling bold, pieced animal hide.
Bright, Saturated Colors
Say goodbye! Bright, saturated colors like purple, teal, and coral are on their way out the door. While they certainly add spunk to a dull room, they are difficult to coordinate. Shades of blue, such as indigo or deep navy, are a natural alternative that complement warm earth tones very well.
Matching Furniture
According to the Zillow Digs Fall Home Design Trend Report, polished matching furniture sets are a thing of the past. Instead, opt-in for eclectic, multi-era decor that will give your home a contemporary feel.
Whirlpool Bathtubs
Whirlpool bathtubs and large bathtubs in general are becoming a thing of the past. Not only do they take up a lot of room, they can easily drain 80-100 gallons of water in one use. If you’re remodeling your bathroom, save space and cut your water bill by investing in a large shower with a seat, lots of shelves for bath products, and a rainwater shower head.

Over-the-Range Microwaves
Installing a microwave over the stovetop was an idea that arose 20 or 25 years ago to save valuable countertop space. With open-concept kitchens on the rise, a beautiful kitchen design is even more important since the look you choose can impact the look of the rest of your home. Let’s face it, an over-the-range microwave, just isn’t that attractive. When remodeling your kitchen, choose a stylish range hood and use a microwave drawer for under-the-counter access. Tiled Countertops
While tiled countertops have been around for a while, their popularity has resurfaced over the recent years. Although tile may be affordable when compared to other countertop materials, it is not as resilient and can make your kitchen look cheap. Tiled countertops are also very difficult to clean, so if you spill something like tomato sauce, get ready for some serious grout-scrubbing. Instead of tile, consider a natural stone slab, or even quartz. Read more about the benefits or quartz and why I chose it for my own kitchen remodel in this blog post.
Brass Hardware
Changing your door knobs, handles, faucets, and cabinet pulls are a quick and easy way to update your home on a budget. If you have brass hardware, consider replacing it with brushed or satin nickel, maybe even stainless steel.
