1st Floor Master Bedroom Suite Serves Homeowners—And Their Dog
Thursday, August 16th, 2018
Floor plans with master bedrooms on the first floor have become increasingly popular in the past couple decades, especially among empty nesters and baby boomers who are planning for easier mobility within their homes. Such was the case with homeowners in Whittington Creek who decided the time had come to add a master suite to the first floor of their two-story, four-bedroom home.
However, the idea for the first floor master suite wasn’t originally because the homeowners were aging to the point that it was a necessity in order to be able to function in the home, but that their family dog was.
The homeowner explained, “Initially we wanted a master suite on the first floor so that I didn’t have to carry Peyton, our aging Boxer, up and down the stairs. Now we rationalize the expansion as a way to actually reduce our living space but also keep the bigger house as my wife and I get older.”
The homeowners contacted designer Jeannie Johnson for the overall design and details of the main floor master suite. Architect Bill Andrews prepared the blueprints and sourced McCamy Construction through a competitive process.
McCamy followed the blueprints and met with Jeanie Johnson to select all materials. The addition included:
- Custom vanity made with a tower and marble top
- Walk-in curbless shower
- Huge custom closets
The homeowners also had the foresight to view the renovation as an opportunity to update several tired or outdated elements of their existing house. Along with the master suite addition, updates to the existing house included:
- Fresh paint in foyer and on doors and trim throughout the home
- New trim and paint on stairway to second floor
- New windows in kitchen and on doors to outdoor porch
- Renovation to an upstairs guest bath
- New outdoor porch slate
Together with the master suite addition, these updates combined to make the entire house feel fresh and modernized. However, these efforts needed to be carefully orchestrated. The challenge with any addition or renovation is always to match new elements with the existing design and features. Whether this means matching new brick to an old brick, duplicating the same window treatments, or getting the trim details perfect, McCamy’s goal is to always make it almost unnoticeable that any space is a new addition or renovation.
The homeowners said this level of careful integration was their goal as well, “Our house is approaching 25 years old. We wanted the addition to look and feel like the design of rest of the house. We wanted it to be seamless, and it is. The new living space updated the house, and brings it up to today’s living standards.”
They were also pleased with the construction process, adding, “In any construction project, change orders can be an issue for both parties. McCamy uses technology to capture the requests, submit cost estimates, and then get approvals before performing the work. This process helped to avoid any misunderstandings.”
The homeowners, and their dog Peyton, are thrilled with their new living space. “A first floor master suite makes our home more livable as we age. We now have fewer steps to climb. Also, ironically, by expanding it feels like we now have a smaller “footprint” for our living space. Yet at the same time we’ve also maintained our yard and bigger home for when family comes to visit. Someday, hopefully in the distant future, it will increase the marketability of our home.”
The Whittington Creek couple said that they chose McCamy Construction based on the team’s reputation for quality work and competitive pricing. Now that their addition and renovations are complete, they say, “We would recommend McCamy to any of our friends because they delivered exactly what we wanted.”
