Partnering With Local Architects Helps Make Homeowners’ Dreams Come To Life
Thursday, July 25th, 2019
People who are considering building a custom home or renovating their current home are visionaries. Each one has a dream of how they want their home to feel and how it might look. It might be that they envision building a new home in such a way that it looks like it has always been cradled in the land it sits on. Or, it may be that they imagine opening up the floorplan of their kitchen, dining, and living room so that their home is more suitable for entertaining.
Whatever their hopes might be for a custom home or renovation project, homeowners have the dreaming part mastered. Making those dreams reality, however, requires a different level of mastery. It’s up to the designers and architects to factor in the countless structural and functional requirements, along with style preferences, budget, and building codes.
McCamy Construction is unique in that we have in-house design professionals who can help with design concepts and decisions. But sometimes homeowners already have a design or architectural blueprint when they come to us, which is great too. We work closely with their architects to build what they’ve envisioned. And, in certain other cases, consulting with an outside architect on a project reinforces our team’s expertise.
Regardless of the scenario or the scope of the project, we enjoy working with several talented architects. Here are a few of the local architects we’ve collaborated with to build some of our favorite custom home or renovation projects:
Jonathan Miller
Jonathan Miller designed a gorgeous 3,385 square-foot farmhouse on the French Broad River. He seamlessly incorporated the homeowners’ wishes for traditional farmhouse style blended with modern elements—including a contemporary kitchen with old barn accents, geothermal heating, and solar power.
The homeowner said, “It was really important to us that the home looked like had been here a long time and that it belonged to the land. We wanted it to look like maybe it had been a farmhouse from even a century ago that had parts of it added over time. Our taste tends to be more modern or contemporary though, so we also wanted it to look like we’d brought it into this century.”
Bill Andrews
Bill Andrews, often along with designer Jeanie Johnson, has collaborated with McCamy on several stunning projects. Most recently, he drew the blueprints for a 1st floor master bedroom suite in Whittington Creek, and chose McCamy through a competitive process to build the addition.
The homeowner said, ““Our house is approaching 25 years old. We wanted the addition to look and feel like the design of the rest of the house. We wanted it to be seamless, and it is. The new living space updated the house, and brings it up to today’s living standards.”
Bill also designed a River Bend pool house with the same stone, cedar siding, and roofing that’s on the couple’s home. “We also wanted the pool house to look like our current home, with the same stone and roof,” the homeowner said. “It turned out to be the perfect “mini-me” of our house.”
DIA
DIA (Design Innovation Architects) lent their expertise for a major renovation of a Gay Street loft, including the addition of a rooftop bar. This project had unique challenges given the early 1800’s building and adding a staircase and footprint for the rooftop entertainment space. While the style of the renovated loft is contemporary and most materials are new, design elements paid tribute to the original structure, including exposing accents of the old brick and salvaging all floor boards.
Stephen Davis
Stephen Davis modified his popular single level 3-bedroom, 2-bath home design plan called The Olivia for homeowners in Farragut. By adding two feet to each end and turning part of the basement into a third car garage space, the design was precisely what the homeowners wanted.
Of the 2,800 square-foot home with a 500-square-foot studio over the garage, the homeowner said, “I’ve built six homes on my own, and I can say no one beats McCamy quality or their collaborative process. I’ve never been in a house that’s so tight, safe, and well-built; it’s like we’re cocooned. This looks like a home that costs a lot more to build than it actually did.”
West Knoxville Screened-In Porch
Holly Williams
Holly Williams helped develop the design of a screened-in outdoor living space that required a good deal of thinking outside of the box. The plans included a fireplace with a reclaimed beam mantel and an outdoor heater so the space could be comfortably utilized by the family of 5 in three seasons.
The homeowner said, “It’s 10-times better than I imagined. I think I had something in the back of my mind that was perfect, but I had also gotten myself comfortable to accept if it came out to be 50% of what I had in mind. However, we got even more than 100% of what my perfect vision was.”
Johnson Architecture
Daryl Johnson drew up the plans for homeowners in Sequoyah who loved their home but needed more room for their growing kids as well as a comfortable space for guests to stay. Johnson’s solution was two-fold: repurpose their old garage space into a playroom and add an addition for a guest suite.
The homeowner said, “We had a good idea of what we wanted because we had worked with an architect before contacting McCamy. The challenge was to find a contractor that could realize our vision for expanding our home in a manner that perfectly complemented our existing house. For example, the beauty of our home lies in its proportionality, so great care had to be taken in constructing the new roof – its apex, slope, and where it connected to the existing structure. McCamy’s team was outstanding!”
Working with talented, innovative architects and designers to create custom solutions that delight each homeowner is what motivates the team at McCamy Construction, whether it’s for a renovation or for construction of a new home.
