Ask Ashley: New Build Edition

Building a new home can seem like a daunting task, and with McCamy, the options are truly endless! That’s why every project is guided by McCamy designer, Ashley Jones. She works with our homeowners to bring their visions to life and highlight their individual style in every selection. Our two newest builds provided a different challenge. Without homeowners steering the ship, Ashley’s expertise led the way in designing these homes. Her goal: make them timeless, elegant, classy, stylish and modern, but not boring! And we wanted to know how she did it. When making exterior selections, Ashley and McCamy president, Grant McMahan, worked together to create stylish homes that were current but not overly trendy. “Without a client we had a little more freedom to do the dark color on the house and really highlight this new trend, while also doing a little more modern take on the white farm house. It was fun to be able to experiment with the outside more than normal,” Ashley explained. While not being restricted by a neighborhood architectural committee, they still aimed for a cohesive look between the homes. They have common elements such as the brick foundation, hardie siding and window and door designs, but each one has its own distinct personality and style. “At the white house, I really went with a more modern, craftsman style package. The cabinets, doors, plumbing and lighting were all very clean and simple shapes. I upgraded the faucets in the kitchen and upstairs baths to a black finish, which is becoming more popular, but kept the design very sleek and classic,” Ashley said. Patterned tile, fun light fixtures and trim details elevate the space and avoid a “cookie cutter” spec home feel. “For the dark blue house I wanted a more traditional style. The cabinets, trim, plumbing and lighting all had more details to them, but without being overly ornate. This gave each house its own unique interior style while keeping with the trends.” The selections in this home give a cozy and homey feel, while remaining neutral for future homeowners to add their own personal touches. Ashley and Grant also made adjustments to the plans in order to make the homes as functional as possible. “We opened up some spaces, moved a couple walls, added another bathroom in one plan, and lots of good storage areas. The front end work is just as important as the finish details. The proper planning gave us an opportunity to make the spaces more usable.” We wanted to know her best insights for new construction, and here is what she said:“Really dive into your plans, make adjustments to room sizes, door openings, storage areas on the front end. Make the changes early, it will save time and money. Before making selections really know your style and the items that are your must haves versus ideas you like, but could do without. Work hard to make selections that fit your budget, while leaving room for the extra items. You can always find ways to add your own personality in layout, color, and styling of your space with the selections available. “Now that Ashley has briefed you on all things design, are you ready to tackle your next construction project?
