The Bold and the Beautiful

Home renovation can be quite the adventure, and our June feature called for a bold design to reflect the treasure found beneath the surface. This quirky mid-century home was a full gut job, but the unique structure wasn’t going anywhere. McCamy said “challenge accepted!” and we love how the original charm shines through even after lots of elbow grease.
Starting with the exterior, the design team chose a dark paint color, leaning into the modern lines of the home. Stained tongue and groove was added to the soffits and carport, and new doors brought in even more style and function. The work done on the outside was surprisingly minimal but packed quite a punch–black paint does have that effect!
The interior renovation was a different beast–not a room went untouched in this major flip. A wall between the kitchen and great room was opened up, giving a more open layout on the main level. A whole new kitchen was designed to bring the dark, woodsy exterior in and upgrade the finishes for a more luxurious feel.
There was no shortage of floral wallpaper in this 60s home, which is a design choice we did not choose to mirror in the redesign. We did, however, nod to the retro feel with 4×4 tile and funky fixtures throughout.
Another fun upgrade in this home was the basement fireplace. The asymmetrical layout called for a mid-century moment in the form of stain wood slats and more black paint, of course!
This home had all the makings of a masterpiece. It just needed McCamy’s help to get there. Modern architecture and a secluded wooded lot made it the perfect place for that mid-century mountain house design to shine through. We loved bringing this forgotten home back to life. Experimenting with bold design is a risk, but we love how this fun project turned out!
