Rebuilding for Payton: McCamy Construction Pays It Forward

McCamy Construction has partnered with Rebuilding Together to make a sustainable impact on the Knoxville community.
Rebuilding Together is a non-profit organization that seeks to improve the lives of low-income homeowners by helping them function independently in a warm and safe environment through home rehabilitation. Rebuilding Together particularly serves those who are older or disabled, military veterans, or families with children. When we heard that Rebuilding Together was planning a home renovation in our local community, we got involved and helped transform the home of one brave little girl and her resilient family.
Born at 25 weeks, Payton Scoggins began her struggle for life at one pound, nine ounces. Immediately, she was admitted to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) where doctors detected a hole in her heart ten days later. Her surgery, although intensive, was successful. However, three days later Payton suffered a brain hemorrhage and her parents were told to expect the worst.
Little Payton pushed through and was able to come home at seven months old. While insurance covered the majority of her $2 million hospital stay, the daily expenses of caring for a new baby began to hit the family hard. Although Payton was a strong one, her health issues required 24-hour care. Because of this, her mother decided to quit her job to be a stay-at-home mom and provide the one-on-one care her daughter needed. Both parents knew that living on a single income would make life more challenging, but it was what was best for their family.
Before her first birthday, Payton was diagnosed with
Cerebral Palsy and several other serious medical issues that affect her respiration, speech, and motor skills. Unable to eat solid foods, Payton follows a special diet plan not covered by insurance. She receives two days of in-home care a week in addition to occupational, physical, and speech therapy. All of this, plus her daily medications, have left no room in the family’s budget for home maintenance and repairs.
This is where we came in. Through
Rebuilding Together Knoxville, McCamy Construction was able to repair and renovate the Scoggins’ home to make everyday living easier and more enjoyable for Payton and her parents.
A leak from an old dishwasher had rotted their kitchen floor, so we installed a new floor and installed a new dishwasher. We repaired damaged walls and replaced broken doors. The bathrooms were in need of new toilets and faucets, so we took care of that, as well as a large crack in the master tub. However, the most exciting part of the renovation was making the outdoors more accessible for sweet Payton.
Because she has leg braces and uses a walker to get around, going outside to play was difficult with their old deck’s design. We demolished the deck (and the fence along the home’s perimeter) and built it back with wider steps and a resurfaced finish to make it smooth and splinter-free.
This experience was a memorable one, not only for the Scoggins family, but for us at McCamy Construction.
We learned a lot about each other. It was great to work as a team to help this deserving girl get a backyard that she can enjoy and play in. It’s amazing what can happen when talented people rally around a family in need. It was rewarding for our team to take a break from the everyday grind to help this special little girl and her family.
McCamy Construction would like to thank the following people for their help in making this home renovation possible:
