Pool House Design Gives Nod To Original Home While Replicating New Home
Friday, June 29th, 2018
When the homeowners tore down an old house on their property in River Bend, they saved many of the materials, such as windows and doors. They built a new home on the property, and thought they might use the materials from the old home to build a guest house.

“That plan got too expensive,” the homeowner said, “plus we really didn’t need the space. Our kids are grown and we have six young grandchildren now.” However, the homeowners do have a pool in their backyard, where they spend a good bit of time with their children and grandchildren during the summer.
“We decided a pool house would be fun, and we could still use the materials we’d saved from the old house for that,” the homeowner said. “We also wanted the pool house to look like our current home, with the same stone and roof. It turned out to be the perfect “mini-me” of our house.”
Designed by Jeanie Johnson with architect Bill Andrews, the pool house is constructed with the same stone, cedar siding, and roofing that’s on the couple’s home. It also incorporates interior cedar paneling, doors, and leaded windows from the property’s original old home that was torn down.

The pool house includes a:
- Kitchenette with a refrigerator
- Kegerator
- Changing room with sink
- Bathroom
- Front porch with 2 swings

The kegerator is a nod to the husband, who owns Knoxville’s popular Balter Beerworks. And a door at the back of the pool house opens to a storage area for patio cushions and pool toys in the winter.
“Grant and Greg were wonderful to work with,” the homeowner said, adding, “All the workers who were here were so respectful.” The homeowners anticipate that the pool house will be the perfect addition to their backyard entertaining with family and friends this summer.
Pool houses,
tennis courts, and permanent
outdoor living spaces are a growing trend both in Knoxville and across the nation, with more homeowners wanting cabanas or screened-in porches that they can enjoy for at least three seasons. The
design options are endless—a screened-in porch with a hammock and fireplace or a
covered patio with a stone fire pit and rustic beams. Whatever your dream may be for your outdoor space, we can build it.
