As the weather warms, homeowners enjoy spending time with their friends and loved ones out of doors, barbecuing in the outdoor kitchen, chatting by the fire pit, and lounging on the patio sipping sweet tea or something stronger. Summer is also the time many homeowners invest in renovating their homes’ exterior and sprucing up their outdoor living space with landscaping, a splash of paint, or new furniture. If your outdoor living space is not up to your standard for entertaining, these five design tips might be just what you need to make your gathering memorable.
1. Doorway
Building an arch, trellis, arbor, or other doorway at the entry of your outdoor living space will give you the distinct feeling of entering a new space. You can choose a beautiful cedar or bamboo for a more natural look or one made of metal that is intricately designed. Plant a climbing plant like a Clematis ‘Josephine’ or Ipomoea ‘Heavenly Blue’for an attractive touch.
2. Accent Wall
You’ve probably heard of painting or papering an accent wall for the interior of your home, but an accent wall for the exterior? Our answer: Absolutely! An accent wall can greet your guests with a burst of eye-catching color or grab their attention with unique brick or wood patterning.
3. Outdoor Curtains
Curtains are a versatile addition to your outdoor living space. You can use thick curtains as room dividers for your yard, marking off areas into cozy, more private spaces or hang sheer drapes around your patio, pool, or hot tub for an exquisite look. Choose a contrasting color for a pop of excitement or stay neutral and be classy.
4. Fencing
Even if you don’t like the idea of privacy fencing, using other types of fencing will frame your outdoor room. Latticework, bamboo, weathered barn wood, or even deliberately placed shrubs will do a phenomenal job in creating a stylish boundary. Once your walls are set, you can decorate them by planting climbing plants or hanging artwork.
5. Mirrors, Chimes, & Artwork
With outdoor artwork, you have the opportunity to express yourself while staying as practical or impractical as you want. A sunburst or fleur de lis wall clock with matching thermometer is a great example of interesting, yet practical decor while a bright painting or twisted iron wall art creates a fun flair. Hang a mirror to add another dimension to small space or chimes for a relaxing tinkling as the breeze blows. From a screened-in porch to an open patio with a rustic-beamed ceiling and roof, designing and building outdoor space additions is one of our well-known specialties.
