Custom Designing a Home Library
Friday, May 16th, 2014
One of the best parts about custom designing a house is that you decide how each room in your dream home will look.
And for book lovers, a home library is an ideal room for custom design. Perhaps you have seen the hundreds of pictures on the web of
beautifully designed home libraries, and imagined designing your very own?
That dream could become a reality, and with less effort than you might think.
One of the most important aspects of a home library is the theme, or the look you want to pervade the entire room.
Perhaps you are looking for a room with floor to ceiling wood paneling and warm lighting, like
George Lucas’ library? Or instead, you prefer something more modern and creative, like the
staircase library. Maybe a large open library with ornate flooring, such as the one found in the
castle of Peralada, Spain would suit your taste?
Whether you choose from one of the
creative designs already in use or decide to come up with a new design all your own, your home library must reflect you.
Some book lovers may pattern the design of their library from one in their favorite books, with stone pillars or fireplaces and ornate tables or comfortable chairs and rustic writing desks. Others might prefer a small cozy room with nooks and niches in which to curl up and read for hours.
Here are a few considerations to take into account as you plan the design of your library.
Use: If the library will be purely a place to store books, then you might decide to make it a practical space with loads of shelving and maybe room for a comfy chair or two. On the other hand, if the library will be a place for a reader to select a book and then spend hours traveling through the pages, truly experiencing the world of the novelist, then the library must reflect this aspect. Comfortable seating, spacious tables, good lighting, and a great reading atmosphere are important.
Lighting: Having enough light is important to protect the eyesight of the voracious reader, but an excess of light can be damaging to the books themselves. Many people prefer to read in natural light, in which case many windows are desirable. If you would love to have natural lighting in your library, be sure to thoroughly research
how to protect your books from excessive lighting.
Comfort: If your home library will be a place in which you will spend hours relaxing and reading, then comfortable furniture is a must. Chairs and couches that provide proper back support and soft cushioning are important to protect your posture and ensure you’ll have a comfy place to delve into a great book.
Atmosphere: A good reading atmosphere is important for your library. Proper temperature, good sound proofing, and controlled humidity are necessary comforts in your home library. These are also excellent conditions for proper book protection. Humidity and improper lighting can wreak havoc on a fine book collection, as can bookworms or other such pests. It is important to design your home library in such a way as to maximize your own comfort and the protection of your books.
