Avoid These Dangers of Laminate Flooring When Remodeling Your Home
Friday, April 7th, 2017
In a previous blog post, we discussed what you should consider when choosing new flooring for your remodel. In this blog post, we’ll talk about a popular flooring material you should avoid.
Laminate flooring is a favorite among homeowners due to its durability, affordability, and its wide selection. However, laminate flooring has several major drawbacks you should know about before selecting a style for your kitchen or bathroom remodel.
1. Laminate flooring should not be used where water is present.
If you’re remodeling a bathroom, laundry room, mud room, or any other room where there’s a high probability of wet floors or a humid atmosphere, you should stay away from laminate flooring. Laminate flooring is not water-friendly. It’s very slippery when wet and harbors mold and mildew much easier than other “wet room” flooring options such as vinyl, natural stone, or tile. 2. Laminate flooring is affordable, but not high quality.
If you’re looking for a flooring material to give your room that special something, laminate is not the way to go. While it’s affordable, laminate just isn’t impressive. Homeowners who want their floors to improve the aesthetic of their homes should invest in a flooring material of higher quality, such as solid hardwood or even engineered hardwood. When counting the cost, keep in mind that the floor you install will be calculated into the overall value of your home, which will benefit you should you decide to sell later down the road.
3. Laminate flooring can’t be refinished.
Although laminate flooring is durable, wear and tear is bound to happen some time or another. Unfortunately, laminate flooring can’t be refinished like hardwood, tile, and stone, for example. With laminate, you’ll have to rip up your floor and install another one every 10-15 years. While its affordability is certainly attractive, laminate is just not a great long-term investment. Avoiding the inconvenience of ripping up and installing a new floor alone is well worth the cost of purchasing higher quality flooring.
