The Best Building & Renovation Shows of All Time
Wednesday, March 15th, 2017
When it comes to featuring home improvement in 60 minutes or less, we have a few favorites that take residential remodeling and interior design to the next level.
1. Flip This House
Not to be confused with Flip That House, Flip This House is a A&E reality series that features real-estate investors from different cities who… you guessed it: flip a house.
House flipping has recently become a hot topic in the renovation and remodeling industry and this show takes a quick look at the most exciting moments and shows viewers what can be done when you have good taste in home design and a reasonable budget.
What We Love About This Show
Every episode includes important need-to-knows when flipping a property, not just the purchase and the final reveal. You’ll see what a good real estate deal looks like, how to avoid amateur flipper mistakes, and you’ll even learn a few pro tips to use on your own home.
2. Fixer Upper
An HGTV favorite, Fixer Upper features power couple Chip and Joanna Gaines, owners of Magnolia Homes in Waco, Texas. Over the past 12 years, they have worked on more than 100 homes together, combining Chip’s great instinct on real estate and Joanna’s unique eye for design.
A typical episode involves the two finding and renovating a house for their client; essentially, turning a run-down property into a gorgeous home that matches the new homeowner’s needs and personality perfectly.
What We Love About This Show
We love shocking before and afters and this show never disappoints. Every episode includes dramatic transformations with cutting-edge design, quite similar to the way we at McCamy like to do things. Check out this blog post to see what we mean.
3. This Old House
Perhaps the oldest home improvement reality show on cable television, This Old House aired on PBS for the first time in 1979 and is currently in it’s 39th season. It was so well-loved, in fact, that it has inspired multiple parodies, including the popular 90’s show Home Improvement, starring Tim Allen.
Unlike most building and renovation shows that highlights a new project every episode, This Old House follows one home’s progress over a series of episodes, which means one season of this show only features one or two homes.
What We Love About This Show
We really appreciate how This Old House explores home renovations in a more realistic manner. Of course there’s still that “Hollywood” aspect that makes it fun to watch, but by dedicating one episode to the kitchen and master bath renovation and another to the screened porch and backyard landscaping, This Old House proves that you can’t rush perfection and you most certainly can’t complete an entire large scale home renovation in 45 minutes.
