If you run a retail business, you know how important it is to appeal to the consumer’s taste in every aspect of your business. It’s not just the clothes, accessories, books or electronics that you sell that need to appeal to your customers. It’s also the ambience of the store, the kind of music you play and the way the sales people communicate that helps to determine what your profits will be. Even when it comes to the commercial construction of the space, design it in a way that speaks to your customer.
Diana Warner, a Knoxville entrepreneur and one of our clients, truly understands how to design a retail space that speaks to hercustomers. Diana was very involved in the design process for her new Knoxville store in The Gallery Shopping Center. She had the vision to make it feel just like a welcoming boutique in New York and so we worked diligently to create a space that represented the Big Apple theme Diana had in mind.
Salon Visage owner Frank Gambuzza is also one of our clients. Frank had a definite concept of what was important in the renovation of his salon. He understands what makes his business successful and creating that environment was crucial to the success of the project. “We deal with a fashionable, upscale market, and we needed to stay ahead as a market leader to deliver top aesthetics and top quality.”
Here are a couple of tips to remember when you’re constructing or renovating your retail space:
Make the entrance inviting. There’s a great deal to be said about the entrance to your store. Imagine the difference between a functional door with a security guard sitting next to it…now picture that same entrance with double glass doors leading to red-carpeted steps that direct the customer to the center of the store where a chandelier hangs from the ceiling. An attractive entrance at a busy corner will attract customers who may not even have thought of entering the store otherwise.
Display windows. Display windows are a must for any retail space. Customers are lured in when they see the latest fashions on mannequins, especially if they have been combined in an aesthetically pleasing way. The backdrop of your display window is also important. If you look at the display windows at Macy’s in Herald Square in New York City, you’ll notice that they are works of art in themselves, especially around Christmas time. You can work with your commercial contractor to create display windows that draw potential customers into your store. Try tall windows from which you can look past the display into the store or more contained windows which are like mini-theaters with backdrops, props and mannequins.
Decorating your interiors. Matching your interiors to what you’re selling is always a smart idea. If your product is young and hip, create a youthful vibe with bright colors, modern-looking furniture and plenty of light.
If your product is more artistic or bohemian, including retro accents like chandeliers or antique furniture and mixing them up with modern-looking accents like sculptural staircases and geometric mirrors can really make all the difference.
If you’re setting up a retail space, work with your contractor to create the kind of space that speaks to your customer.
