4 Space-Saving Kitchen Designs
Wednesday, March 16th, 2016
For most homeowners, the kitchen is the hub of the home. It’s where meals are prepared and enjoyed, it’s where guests mingle, and it’s where traditions are passed from one generation to the next. Since our beginnings, McCamy Construction has been building and renovating custom kitchens in Knoxville and the surrounding areas. One of the most popular requests our clients have during the concept stage of our design process is to, “ Please, please, please make the most of our kitchen space!” No problem!
Here are four of the many ways we fulfill our homeowners’ wishes for a bigger and better kitchen.
Open Floor Plan
The best way to give a claustrophobic kitchen more space is to tear down its walls. No, I’m not kidding. An open floor plan removes doors and walls, integrating the kitchen, dining room, and living room into one big dwelling space. With no twisted halls to navigate, a combined kitchen/dining/living area allows for easier accessibility and a better line of sight. An open floor plan is perfect for parents of young children and less mobile individuals. We designed an open floor plan for the owners of this Kensington custom home with painted custom cabinetry, quartz countertops, and unique built ins. We also incorporated open shelving, a popular trend for modern kitchens.
An open floor plan lets your kitchen breathe and facilitates movement throughout the rest of your home. This is one of the reasons many people looking to build a new custom home choose this kind of layout. See our other forever home design recommendations in this blog post.
Built-In Corner Wall Pantries
Recently, we built a custom home in the Wellington Chase community. The kitchen was designed with an open layout that featured beautiful painted wood cabinets with pullout drawers, slow close hinges, and mixed custom pulls and crystal knobs. However, the most unique aspect of this kitchen was the staggered corner wall pantry. It saved space while adding more room for food and dish storage while creating a look unique to the home. Appliance Cabinets & Drawers
The countertop is one of the most coveted spaces in the kitchen, especially for people who enjoy entertaining. In order to have enough space to prepare and serve food and drink, many homeowners build an island in the middle of their kitchen to add more of that valuable space. However, a custom kitchen island is not the only way to add more of that countertop space you so desperately crave. Appliance cabinets and drawers allow you to take advantage of the countertop space you already have. This is a great option for homeowners with smaller budget or just smaller kitchens.
When my wife and I remodeled our kitchen last year, one of the most interesting choices we made was how we installed the microwave. We knew we didn’t want to lose any countertop space and we really didn’t want to lose any upper cabinet space either. After brainstorming a few ideas, we decided to go with a microwave drawer, placed in the lower cabinets beside the stove. This allowed us to have easy access to our microwave without interrupting the flow of the upper cabinetry or taking up valuable counter space.
Single Bowl Farmhouse Sinks
Opting for a single bowl sink rather than a double bowl sink is another way to save you a foot or more of countertop space. Farmhouse sinks of various sizes are a popular choice for most modern homes. Selecting one that is capacious enough to get the job done without taking up too much room is easy. Farmhouse sinks also come in a wide range of styles, from a traditional smooth apron front in a sparkling white to one that’s more elaborately designed with a copper finish.
