The Top 5 Kitchen Design Trends for 2016
Thursday, January 21st, 2016
It’s a brand new year and now is the time to start planning for that custom kitchen renovation you’ve been dreaming about since you purchased your home. You’ve flipped through a couple of Good Housekeeping’s magazines, pinned a few ideas onto your Pinterest board, spent a number of hours browsing Houzz for great kitchen designs, and now you’re here. As a leader in new construction and remodeling as determined by both clients and peers in Knoxville Mercury and Cityview Magazine, we’ve rounded up the top five kitchen design trends for 2016. Take a look.
1. Boldly Traditional
Homeowners opting for a more traditional kitchen are embracing a no-frills kitchen design. This approach uses simplicity, bold lines, and a strategic emphasis on range hoods, islands, and cabinet crowns to create a clean and crisp tailored feel.
2. 1980’s Revamp
Brace yourselves. The ‘80’s are making a comeback. Mirrored backsplashes, brass accessories, and high-gloss surfaces are just a few of the kitchen trends you might remember from almost 40 years ago that you’ll be seeing again in 2016 with a few simple modifications. Using a variety of natural materials,
interior designers are revamping this look to make it more elegant and less plastic and recommend satin over a shiny finish when choosing brass hardware.
3. Soft & Neutral
From kitchen cabinets to backsplashes to hardwood floors, the color scheme for modern kitchens is softening. While white is still the dominant color for 2016 kitchens, neutral colors like charcoal gray, tinted white, and even more colorful neutrals like pale blue and green gray are a new favorite for walls and cabinetry. Newer kitchens are also no longer using bold primary colors to draw visual interest. Instead, muted colors such as blues, greens, and yellow pastels accent the space. When it comes to hardwood floors and all-natural wooden cabinetry, lighter wood grains like walnut and white oak are becoming more popular.
4. Nordic Minimalist
Nordic style (also called mid century modern style) was minimalist movement that was popular in the ‘60’s and is starting to be seen again in newer kitchens with predominantly white color palettes, light wood design elements and uncluttered countertops. This design is all about simplicity and functionality, but is not without a little flair. Colored elements like sinks, backsplashes, slide-in stoves, and countertop appliance are used to add character to an otherwise neutral space.
5. Cabinetry Lighting
Illuminating your kitchen is no longer done by ceiling lights and table lamps alone. Under cabinet lighting is a trend that is taking modern kitchens by storm. Homeowners taking advantage of this phenomenon are placing LED light strips below cabinets, above cabinets, inside cabinets, and below countertop overhangs.
In this Wellington Chase home, we installed custom under cabinet lighting to bring the kitchen to life. While under cabinet lighting might sound like a small detail (and one that most would cut out of their budget), the way it brings out the natural details of the backsplash and marble countertops completes the look and is well worth the money.
You spend more time entertaining in the kitchen than in any other room of your home. Your kitchen’s layout, placement of the sink and appliances, island and cabinetry all contribute to the flow that is essential to an enjoyable experience.
