The Hottest Home Design Trends to Watch for This Year
Wednesday, January 11th, 2017
Home design trends go almost as quickly as they come, so it’s important for interior designers to stay on the cutting edge of home design to keep their clients’ homes current. Over the past year, I’ve watched the good trends stick around, the bad trends fade, and have predicted the following to be some of the hottest design trends you’ll see in 2017. Take a look!
Taupe is the New Gray

Move over, gray! A funny name for a versatile color, taupe is taking over walls, fabric, and flooring by storm. Used as simple paint or in glamorous wallpaper designs, taupe adds a sense of style, warmth, and elegance to any interior decor, modern or classical. It captures the light beautifully without darkening the atmosphere and exudes a discreet glamour and delicacy white tones cannot.
Wallpaper’s Got You Covered
Wallpaper has changed a lot over the years and has always been a trusty go-to if you’re looking to add some texture to an otherwise boring room. However, wallpaper is going to be a much more popular choice in 2017. With bold colors and intriguing patterns, wallpaper’s got you covered if you’re looking for a popping new look.
Painted Cabinets, But Not Just White!
If you’re cabinets are in good condition, but you’re ready for something different, a few coats of paint may be all you need to add some inspiration to your kitchen, bathroom, or mudroom. Of course, white is the safest option, but in 2017, it won’t be the most popular! Dark colors like navy blue, hunter green, and deep turquoise will be making a comeback, but there will still be room for those who love grays and pastels as well.
Do a Double Take with Two Toned Cabinetry
If painting your cabinets one color isn’t enough, this is your year! Two toned cabinetry is making an appearance in 2017 with light and bright on top and dark and bold on bottom. Check out these cabinets we recently did during a home renovation in Riverbend. We mixed things up even further by painting the upper cabinets white and using a wood stain on the lowers. Pretty cool, huh?
Look Rich with Jewel Toned Accents
When it comes to interior design, jewelry isn’t the only thing that can make precious stones look good. From curtains to bedding to lampshades and rugs, jewel toned accents will make your home look rich and energetic even if you’re on a budget. Try garnet and amethyst or sapphire and topaz, or this great combination of a muted jewel color scheme in this bedroom below.
Smart Homes for Smart People
With a new gadget turning up daily, technology has become an integral part of our everyday lives and has even invaded home design. Did you know that you can see who is ringing your doorbell when you’re miles away from home? Or turn down your lights with just a swipe of your finger? Now you can! In 2017, you’ll be seeing a lot more smart technologies in homes across the nation. If that’s sounds like something you’d like to introduce in your own home, read A Beginner’s Guide to Making Your Home a Smart Home for suggestions on how to embrace smart home technology.
