Sequoyah Hills Renovation Transforms “Weird” Kitchen Into Classy, Open Space
Tuesday, January 30th, 2018
A Sequoyah Hills complete renovation transformed a “weird” kitchen into a classy French country space suitable for the young family that had recently purchased the home. The homeowners had met with other contractors in the area but chose McCamy Construction based on a relative’s referral and their experience meeting with Grant and Ashley to discuss design ideas.
The kitchen space in the 1940’s house was initially divided into two small spaces, one for cooking and the other for a butler’s pantry. The previous owners had opened it up to create just one space, but as the new homeowner put it, “The layout was just really weird.” There were two islands, two sinks, and the steel cabinets didn’t suit the style of the house.
The homeowners wanted to do a complete overhaul to open the kitchen space up to the dining room on one end and a small playroom for their one-year-old son on the other. Creating this open floor plan was crucial to their vision for how they wanted to cook, entertain, and spend time together as a family.
“We had a good idea of how we wanted it to feel open, with a rustic, French country style. Ashley helped with the specific design elements, like the best place to put the sink, and which tile, fixtures, and colors would help it all flow together,” the homeowner said.
The kitchen was gutted completely down to the studs. We removed the wall between the kitchen and the small den that would be their son’s playroom, and we opened up the wall on the other side to the dining room.
We removed the flooring, which was tile on top of hardwood, and installed new hardwood not only in the kitchen but throughout the first floor which creates a more seamless flow of the floor plan. In addition, we stripped the old wallpaper throughout the first floor and painted the walls to accentuate the flow.
Installing an island and centering the stove hood provides a focal point while new, painted cabinets and quartz countertops give the kitchen a modern look that still suits the traditional style of the home.
The best part of the entire Sequoyah Hills renovation, the homeowners said, is the open flow. The couple can cook in the kitchen while still seeing their young son nearby in the playroom or their friends at the dining table.
“We’re so happy with the outcome,” the homeowner said. “You expect ups and downs to be par for the course with any renovation, but it really helped that we always had good communication from McCamy. Grant was always responsive if any issue popped up, and was great at keeping us updated on the status and progress throughout the project. We’ve already talked with him about some other potential projects.”
