McCamy Construction Transforms Layout Of 1940’s Sequoyah Home

One of the distinct differences of the McCamy team is the ability to visualize out-of-the-box designs, problem-solve challenges, and execute the most seemingly tricky interior renovation projects.
This level of vision and expertise once again made all the difference when it came to transforming the floorplan of a 1940’s 4-bedroom Colonial home in Sequoyah. The seed for the renovations was the owners’ wish for a better flow throughout the layout of the home.
Namely, the floorplan was choppy—both throughout the downstairs kitchen and living areas and the upstairs bedroom and bathroom areas—and lacked any sense of design flow from room to room. However, the homeowners were unsure of how best to change that until talking with McCamy, whose design team came up with solutions for a floorplan that would flow easily both downstairs and upstairs.
Renovations started with the kitchen, which, as the homeowner summarized, “The layout was just really weird.” Years earlier, two original separate spaces for a small kitchen and a smaller butler’s pantry had been opened into one awkward space with two sinks and two islands.
The kitchen renovation project also involved opening up the downstairs floorplan in order to connect the kitchen to the dining room on one end, and to a small playroom for their children on the other end. The homeowners had a good idea of how they wanted the new, more open floorplan to look, with a cohesive rustic, French-country style, and they were thrilled with the results.

A Solution To Upstairs Floorplan Challenges
However, figuring out a smart floorplan to make the 2nd floor flow as easily as the downstairs was a bit more difficult.
The homeowner said, “The original layout of the house did not have a direct pathway from the main stairway to the back stairway, so we had to go through the master bedroom, a bathroom, and then another bedroom to get from one stairway to the other. We knew we needed a better layout for our family, especially with two young children.”
The solution was to create a hallway to give access to all the bedrooms upstairs and lead from the front stairway to the back stairs. In order to do so, space was taken from the original master bedroom closet and bathroom. This presented the perfect opportunity to completely renovate the master bath and also create a new master suite closet from a small, adjacent bedroom.
“We were most excited to design the new master bathroom,” the homeowner said, adding, “We knew we wanted a large walk-in shower, a double vanity, heated floors, and a heated towel rack.
“Ashley, McCamy’s design director, and Grant worked very closely with us on the design and the entire process. They were able to incorporate all of our must-haves for the bathroom, even with the limited space. Ben, the project supervisor, was really great at keeping us informed and on time throughout the construction process.”
Adding to the challenge of any given home construction project, this upstairs round of major renovations also needed to revolve around the schedule of a busy family with a toddler and a baby in the home.
The McCamy crew remained vigilant about working around nap times for the children and cleaning up well at the end of each day. It’s just another part of McCamy’s commitment to respect the lifestyle needs of each family whose homes we have the privilege to work in.
The homeowners said, “We are so happy with how everything turned out! We love using our new bathroom and closet every day, and I think our favorite part has been our walk-in shower. It feels like having a luxury hotel bathroom in our house! Plus, having a hallway makes all the rooms so much more accessible upstairs, which is so important with having young children. We had a great experience working with McCamy, and would definitely recommend them!”
